Tyrants, Colonialism and Slavery

Tour dates and times:

Thursday - 22 August 2024 - 14:00

We learn about the darker side of British history on this fascinating walk where we visit places with connections to colonialism and slavery.

Join us on the unique walking tour around the Westminster area were we visit some statues and places that have a significance to tyranny, colonialism and slavery. It is led by a qualified London tour guide, Caroline.

At one statue we hear about the explorer who had a very dark secret, we stop at the Treasury to hear about a huge debt; the largest ever in British history that had to be paid to end slavery (but where did it end up?), the savagery of a man called “Lord Vulture” and how did he meet his end? The rather bigoted views of a famous war time leader and we hear about the heart-warming story of a former enslaved man and the successful life he had after being freed and we also hear about the Royal who was elbow deep in the blood of enslaved people.

Please note: the tour will include discussions of violence, enslavement, colonialism, and discrimination.

This walk is led by a qualified City of Westminster guide, Caroline Mongan. Meet Caroline by the pillars of the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square.

This free walk is part of the “Inside Out” programme of walks, kindly supported by Westminster Council.

After the walk we would be very grateful if you could you complete a short survey, with questions about the walk. Thank you.
