We will walk through what was once fields until the mid-18th century. Fascinating guided walk.
This walk considers how two bypasses lead to the development of this part of London. In particular the fine Regency architecture and how it became the heart of medical London.
The walk includes an American President, the father of Queen Victoria, a queen of Haiti, a pioneer of antiseptic surgery and the beginnings of the most famous detective in the world.
Some unusual facts, the unpickable lock, how the Battle of Waterloo led to a church being built and one of the great love stories of the Victorian period.
The walk is all flat pavements apart from one short cobbled area. The walk finishes about 5 minutes’ walk from Baker Street station, and near plenty of places for lunch.
This walk is led by a qualified City of Westminster guide, Kim Lovell. Meet Kim outside Great Portland Street Station NW1
This free walk is part of the “Inside Out” programme of walks, kindly supported by Westminster Council.
After the walk we would be very grateful if you could you complete a short survey, with questions about the walk. Thank you.
